Honolulu, Hawai‘i — In the wake of recent severe weather conditions across the islands, Hawaiian Telcom is accelerating the transition from its copper network to its statewide fiber network to restore service more quickly and connect customers to a more reliable, resilient communications network.
As Hawai‘i moves closer to becoming the nation's first fully fiber-enabled state, Hawaiian Telcom is encouraging customers to learn about the benefits of fiber and upgrade when service becomes available in their area.

"Where fiber is available, upgrading customers allows us to restore service more quickly than rebuilding aging copper facilities while providing a more reliable long-term solution for homes and businesses."
To meet the urgent need, Hawaiian Telcom will perform the fiber upgrade for its customers at no cost.
Fiber-optic technology delivers faster speeds, greater reliability, expanded bandwidth, and lower latency than traditional copper networks. Fiber is better equipped to support remote work, online learning, telehealth appointments, video streaming, and connected home devices. In addition, when connected to a backup power source, fiber service can continue operating through many commercial power outages, helping customers stay connected when communications are needed most.
Today, nearly 90 percent of Hawai‘i residents can access Hawaiian Telcom fiber broadband service. Hawaiian Telcom continues to expand its fiber network across the state while retiring portions of its legacy copper infrastructure that are no longer needed to support communications services.
For customers whose service has been impacted by recent storms, Hawaiian Telcom may recommend or require an immediate upgrade to fiber when fiber service is already available at their location.
