HONOLULU – Hawaiian Telcom today announced its renovated headquarters offices at 1177 Bishop St. in downtown Honolulu have earned LEED Silver certification, a globally recognized standard for sustainable and healthy building design. The renovation reflects the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship, employee well‑being and long‑term climate action in Hawai’i.
The project measurably reduces energy and water use, lowers greenhouse gas emissions — including those associated with commuting — and enhances indoor environmental quality for employees working in the space.
LEED Silver certification supports Hawaiian Telcom’s climate action plan, which targets a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The company also aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity to net zero by 2040.
“Workplaces play a critical role in employee health, productivity and overall well‑being, while buildings themselves have a significant environmental footprint,” said Su Shin, president of Hawaiian Telcom. “Pursuing LEED certification for our headquarters renovation provided meaningful accountability for both our workplace quality and sustainability goals.”
LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is one of the world’s most widely used green building certification systems, recognizing projects that deliver energy savings, lower emissions and healthier indoor environments.
Hawaiian Telcom partnered with HBC Facility Management to design and construct the renovated workspace to LEED Silver standards. The project earned 52 points across categories addressing carbon, energy, water, waste, transportation, materials and indoor environmental quality.
Project highlights include:
- A 51% reduction in lighting power use and the use of 100% ENERGY STAR-certified equipment.
- A 36% reduction in indoor water use through low‑flow and WaterSense fixtures.
- Refurbishment and reuse of 37% of the furniture and access to outdoor views from 96% of regularly occupied spaces.
- Rebalancing and commissioning ventilation systems to supply fresh outdoor air and thermal comfort.
- Protection of indoor air quality through the use of low‑emitting finishes and furniture.
- Responsible sourcing of environmentally preferred materials, including recycled, bio‑based and non‑toxic products.
