Hawaiian Telcom Extends Backoffice Support from Verizon

HONOLULU (Friday, Dec. 2, 2005) -- Hawaiian Telcom Inc. today announced early April as the timeframe for ending Verizon’s backoffice support to the company.

Hawaiian Telcom is developing about 80 information technology systems to create an integrated backoffice platform. Verizon has been providing backoffice support while Hawaiian Telcom and its vendors work towards deployment of the new information technology (IT) systems. Hawaiian Telcom has an agreement with Verizon for continued and uninterrupted support from Verizon’s IT systems until the early April cutover.

“The majority of our new systems are at a stage where they could have been deployed by early February, which was our original objective,” said Mike Ruley, Hawaiian Telcom’s chief executive officer. “We’ve determined that a few of the systems would benefit from additional development time. We think it’s a prudent decision to extend backoffice support, and it’s based on our goal of reducing any adverse customer impact as much as possible during our final transition off of Verizon’s backoffice systems.”

An option to extend support is part of the contract under which Verizon sold assets in Hawaii.
